Red, pink, nude, glossy, matte, …… There is a huge range of different kind of lipsticks in the market and sometimes, when we are trying to choose one, we can feel overwhelmed. In this post, I am going to make an overview of the different type of lipsticks and I am going to give you few tips to help you to choose the better one for your lips’ shape.
People have been using lip makeup for a very long time. For example, people from Mesopotamia used a sort of paste made of clay to put over the lips. In Egypt both male and female used paints based on metals as lip makeup. Other cultures as well used different pigments to give colour to their lips.
It was in the 20th century when the lip makeup industry appeared and developed a huge variety of lipsticks. Nowadays we can find lip makeup in different textures, with different finishes and effects and in an unimaginable variety of colours.
We can classify lip products following different criteria. We are going to see in this post lip products in different finishes, textures and with different effects.
Different Lip Product Type
Lip Pencil
They are also known as Lip Liner. They are mainly used to draw a line outside the lips to improve the lips’ shape. You can use them also to fill the lips and apply other lip products on top. That will make the top lip product last longer on your lips.
LAGirl Lipliner Pencil |
Lipstick
That is the typical, most traditional lip product. I am sure we all have seen that on our grannies’ dressing table. They exist in a huge variety of finishes, like matte, velvet, dewy, semi-matte and a long list.
Milani Colour Statement Moisture Lipstick |
Liquid Lipstick
It is a liquid product that you should apply with a wand or lip brush. They normally have a matte finish after drying and are normally long-lasting. They tend to dry your lips.
You can read more in ‘I Heart Revolution Tasty Peach Liquid Lipstick review’ to know more about this type of lip product.
Sosu Lip Pigment Gloss |
Lip Tint
They are normally liquid lipsticks with a water-based pigment and without any oil-based component in the formula. However, they can also be in lipstick form. They are literally ink for your lips, once dried there is no transference at all. The negative part is that lips become really dry.
Illamaqua Hydra Lip Tint |
Lip Cream
You can normally find this type of product as part of a palette. They should be applied with a lip brush and it is very easy to control how much product you apply.
Yves Saint Laurent Lip Palette |
Crayon
They are very similar to the Crayola pencil we used when we were child, but to colour your lips and not paper. They used to be very big, look like a big lip liner, but you don’t need to sharpen.

Different finishes of lipsticks
Most of the lip products come in different finishes. Nowadays, the number of finishes is increasing constantly and brands are developing different fantasy finishes as metallic, iridescent, holographic, duo-chrome, and more. The main and most common type of finishes are:
Satin
That is one of the most popular and most comfortable finishes. Satin lip products are normally hydrating but they don’t last long on the lips and transfer a lot.
Makeup Revolution Rockstar Hydrating Shine Lipstick |
Matte
Matte lipsticks tend to dry the lips. You can avoid or minimise that effect by deeply hydrating your lips before applying the lipstick. Matte lipsticks are normally long-lasting.

Wet’n’Wild Megalast Matte Lipstick |
Gloss
They give a glowy and dewy look to your lips but they don’t last on the lips and they are very sticky.
Too Faced Lip Injection Lip Gloss |
Effects of lipsticks can give
There is some sort of controversy about if this category is lip makeup or lip care products. I think they are in a middle point between both as they take care of your lips but at the same time, they have some colour or gloss. Anyway, the effects lipsticks can produce on your lips are mainly:
Plumping
They have a component in the formula which produces a sort of itchy or tingling effect in the lips. It is like when you apply menthol. That makes the lips become red and look with more volume.
Jouer Essential Lip Enhancer |
Balm
Lip balms have nourishing ingredients and help to keep the lips hydrated and healthy. They can be completely colourless or have some pale colour.
NYX Lip Oil |
Scrub
Lips scrubs do not give colour to your lips, but they are a “must-have” if you want healthy-looking lips. Scrubs mainly eliminate dead skin as they exfoliate the dead cells on the lip. It is advised to use them at least two or three times a week.

Tips for different lip shape
Nowadays there are a huge variety of lip products in different colours. From nudes to deep red, going through the romantic pink, the explosive neon shades, vampire violet or black, blue, and many more, only your imagination is the limit.
However, some colours help you to correct the shape and thickness of your lips. This is not a rule, so try and check what works for you.
Thin lips
Thin lips will look better with pale colours, dark colours make things look smaller. People with thin lips can also take advantage of electric shades. If that is your case, try to use neon lip products.
The ideal lipstick finish for people with thin lips is the gloss. Using a lip liner before applying the lipstick can help your lips to look thicker.
Thick Lips
Thick lips are just the opposite of the thin lips and people with thick lips will benefit from dark colours. People with thick lips are lucky, as most of the lip colours will suit them.
However, if you don’t want Kardashian’s lips, you should avoid lip gloss and use instead matte or semi-matte lipsticks.
Uneven lips
Most of the lips are asymmetric, very few people have even lips. However, in some cases, the difference is quite noticeable. In that situation, it is very handy to use two similar colours, applying the darker shade on the thicker lip and the clear shade on the thinner one.
Among all the different lip products in the market, my favourites are lipstick or liquid lipstick and if possible, with a matte finish.
Which is your favourite lip product? Do you know anything not listed in the post, let me know in the comments.
