Fun in the Sun: Summer Hair Care for Beginners

Summer’s here and it is time to soak up in the sun. But, wait, don’t let the heat mess with your hair. Get ready for this season with my summer hair care guide. Discover all the secrets to keep your hair looking stunning throughout summer days.

Summer Hair Care

Keep your hair hydrated Summer Hair Care

It is important to keep the hair hydrated all year. However, during summer it is even more critical. Our hair is in contact with sea salt and chlorine and nasty chemicals. It is also exposed to sun radiation. All these situations cause hair dehydration.

To keep your hair hydrated, apply a moisturising mask every time you wash your hair. In addition, keep hydration from inside by drinking enough water.

A home remedy that works well is applying a mixture of coconut and olive oil over dry hair. However, only apply this mixture if you are not going to be receiving direct sun radiation. I recommend you check this page where you can find homemade recipes for healthy hair.

Use sun protection

We are very familiar with the use of sunscreen over the body and face. What some people don’t know is that there are also available sun protectors for hair. This type of product avoids or reduces the damage that UV radiation causes to the hair.

They are available as an oil, spray or cream. These products hydrate and protect the hair at the same time. They are like 2-in-1 multi-task products.

Care your scalp Summer Hair Care

When we are outdoors, our head is always exposed to sun radiation. Sometimes, our hair is not enough to protect the scalp. The other important fact is that we cannot apply sunscreen directly over the scalp (well, you can if you are bold, but this is a different situation).

To avoid getting your scalp burnt you can wear a hat or something that covers your head.

Summer Hair Care

Always wash your hair after coming from the beach or swimming pool

The sea salt and chemicals added to keep swimming pools clean can damage your hair. Sea salt can dehydrate the hair whereas the chemicals added to swimming pools can damage the hair to different extents. The damages can go from drying or dehydrating the hair up to even changing the hair’s colour.

It is important to rinse your hair when you come out of the water. You should do that even if you didn’t wet your hair. Sea or swimming pool water can splash over your hair without you noticing it.

Avoid the use of a hair dryer.

Extreme heat, as the heat produced by the hair dryer, can dehydrate the hair. If you want to show amazing curls there are few devices available. They easily curl your hair without heating it while you sleep.

If you need to use a hair dryer, apply always a heat protector and try to set up the hair dryer in the coolest position.

Don’t overwash your hair and avoid using many styling products.

You may think that I am going mad as I already advised you to rinse your hair after coming from the beach or swimming pool. But trust me, I am not mad.

What I mean now is that you should avoid using soap or shampoo every time you wash your hair. The excess soap can remove the natural oil and hair the scalp produces. Therefore, the scalp will react producing more sebum. Your hair will look dirty, even if it is not. It is enough rinsing your hair with water.

During summer, use shampoos which are gentle with the hair and scalp. Avoid the use of hair oils if your hair is going to be exposed to the sun. If you have frizzy hair, you can apply a mixture of aloe vera, water and avocado oil.

Also, avoid the use of styling and fixing products. This type of product may contain alcohol, which will dry the hair if it is in contact with the sun’s radiation.

Summer Hair Care

Rinse your hair with cold water.

Cold water improves blood circulation. When rinsing your hair with cold water you eliminate residues and dirt and get shiny hair simultaneously.

You don’t need to wash your hair with cold water. It is enough to use cold water for the last rinsing.

Tie your hair loosely

When you tie your hair, the surface of hair exposed to sun radiation decreases. However, don’t tie your hair too tight, you can damage the hair roots.

Avoid the use of metallic clips. They can easily overheat and this high temperature may burn your hair. Also, avoid parting your hair when styling. Parting your hair leaves the scalp exposed and it can get burnt.

Style your hair with a wide-tooth brush

Many people brush their hair when it is still wet. That can break the hair. The use of a wide-tooth brush minimises the risk of hair breakage.

Avoid greenish reflections on your hair

If you are blonde, you may experience that your hair shows greenish reflections if you frequently go to swimming pools. That is caused by the chemicals added to it. You can avoid that by applying a face mask indicated to avoid this problem before going into the swimming pool.

FAQ about summer hair care

Q: How do I deal with frizz in my hair?

A: You can use anti-frizz serums. Also opt for styling your hair in a bun, ponytail or braids.

Q: My hair gets very dry during summer. Any tips?

A: You can use a moisturiser conditioner after each wash. Wash your hair every other day using a gentle shampoo or use a dry shampoo. Apply a deep conditioning treatment once a week.

Q: How can I protect my coloured hair from fading in the sun?

A: UV rays can cause colour fading. Use products with UV protection specific to coloured hairs. Wearing a hat can also help.
