How does spring affect our skin?

Spring can affect the skin in several ways due to environmental and weather changes. Here are some common ways spring can impact the skin:

Dehydration. As temperatures rise, the skin tends to lose more moisture, leading to dehydration and dryness.

Allergies. Spring is known to trigger seasonal allergies, which can manifest on the skin as redness, itching, and irritation.

Increased oil production. Warmer weather can stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, leading to increased oiliness and the potential for acne breakouts.

Increased sun exposure. With longer, sunnier days, there is increased exposure to UV rays, which can cause sunburn, sun damage, and premature skin ageing.

Changes in sensibility. Some people experience changes in skin sensitivity during the spring due to transitioning from cold to warm climates.

Spring Skincare Tips

To counteract these effects, it is important to adjust the skincare routine. These are my top 10 tips.

1. Exfoliate to remove dead cells.

After the harsh winter months, you should remove all your old, dry skin to reveal a fresh new skin layer. There are plenty of options available for exfoliation. My favourite is the use of a chemical or enzymatic scrub to avoid removing the new, fresh skin layer. Physical scrubs can damage this soft new skin.

2. Cleanse daily. spring skincare

Wash your face twice a day using a cleanser, which helps to remove pollen and pollutants from the pores. I recommend doing the double cleansing, at least at night.

3. Never forget your SPF.

The UV rays can produce permanent skin damage like sunspots, wrinkles, or even skin cancer. Use a high-quality sunscreen with a high SPF (at least 30, but ideally 50). Don’t forget to re-apply it every two hours.

4. Check your moisturiser. spring skincare

Spring is the right time to change your winter moisturiser for a lighter one. During spring, I like to use gel moisturisers, as they refresh my skin while at the same time providing hydration. Apply your moisturiser at least twice a day.

5. Refresh your skin with a face mist. spring skincare

When the weather is warm, a facial mist is ideal to refresh your skin. Face mists can also help you stay free from allergies. Choose a face mist with antioxidants like vitamin C or E.

6. Stop using heavy makeup.

During the spring, you don’t want to cover your skin with a heavy foundation. Instead, you may prefer to use a BB cream or a CC cream to achieve a fresh, natural look.

7. Antioxidant boost

Combat environmental damage and free radicals by incorporating antioxidant-rich skincare products into your routine. Look for ingredients like vitamin C, green tea extract, and niacinamide to protect and repair the skin.

8. Allergy management

If you suffer from seasonal allergies like hay fever, be proactive in managing them to prevent skin irritation and inflammation. Consider using allergy-friendly skincare products and taking antihistamines as needed.

9. Stay hydrated

Hydration isn’t just important for your skin; it’s crucial for your overall health. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out and maintain a healthy glow.

10. Protect your lips

Don’t forget to protect your lips from the UV sun’s rays. Use a lip balm with SPF to prevent sunburn and keep your lips soft and moisturised.

As we embrace the beauty of spring, it’s crucial to remember that our skin requires special attention during this transition. By understanding how spring can impact our skin and implementing the appropriate skin care measures, we can ensure our complexion remains healthy, radiant, and protected throughout the season. Whether it’s staying hydrated, managing allergies, controlling oil production, or safeguarding against sun damage, prioritising skincare in springtime is essential for maintaining a vibrant and youthful appearance. So, as you step into the new season, let these skincare tips guide you towards achieving your skin’s full potential, allowing you to glow with confidence and vitality all spring long.
